Gre=
etings
from The Cellar Door
As this is the first
newsletter since my visit to New Zealand, I thought it would be nice to sha=
re
my experiences with you.
Landing in Auckland =
I was
greeted with grey clouds and rain thrashing down around me. Feeling t=
hat
it was just my luck I soon realized that this was normal and thought welcom=
e to
Auckland! It wasn’t long before the clouds began to clear and I
started my adventure from North to South. The rolling hills and grazi=
ng
cattle accompanied me all the way to Hawke’s Bay. With one roun=
d of
a bend I was surrounded by vineyards, vineyards that ran all the way to the
coast! Flat =
as can
be with barely enough room for a tractor in between, I walked through the
vineyards of Trinity Hill, Villa Maria, and Esk Valley. Tasting these
wines among the stunning scenery was breathtaking and I wondered how the other regions could
compare? But with Martinborough following I soon discovered that all
would be different and just as beautiful. The small town of
Martinborough, home to the iconic wineries Ata Rangi and Palliser Estate, w=
as
charming, warm and friendly. From the local bakery and coffee shop to=
the
cellar doors I was always greeted with a smile. The vines of Palliser
Estate told stories of past vintages while the wines of Ata Rangi showed the
personality of the region.
Hard to leave but the
South Island was still to come… Until the next Noble Rot.

Our
featured vineyards this month are Esk Valley Estate and Mitchell Wines
Esk Valley Estate
Esk Valley Estate winery is sit=
uated in
beautiful Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. The winery was first established =
in
1933, and grew rapidly to become New Zealand's fifth largest winery. =
The
history is obvious when you taste the skilfully crafted wines. Esk Va=
lley
Sauvignon Blanc is a full bodied and rich with tropical fruits and ripe cit=
rus
flavours. Esk Valley Merlot is made in the winery’s classic open
top concrete fermenters, something that you rarely see outside of
France. The wine is very deeply coloured and boasts a full bodi=
ed
and soft palate with flavours of black fruits and chocolate, with a firm
finish.=
Mitchell Wines
Jane and Andrew Mitchell established the win=
ery in
1975 on the Mitchell family property in Clare Valley, South Australia.
Internationally acclaimed and still a family owned winery with their son An=
gus
on the winemaking team. Mitchell Watervale Riesling is intensely arom=
atic
with a fine dry palate and a crisp acidity that lingers. The wine is fresh =
and
lively! As Clare Valley is known for their Rieslings not Shiraz, it is
such a rare treat to find such an affordable Shiraz that is absolutely
refined. The Mitchell Peppertree Shiraz is full flavoured and shows s=
picy
peppery characters with a soft, almost velvety palate which makes the wine =
very
easy to drink.
Enjoy
these wines even more with a “2 for 1” special during Happy Hou=
r at
The Cellar Door Restaurant’s every Thursday & Fridays between 4pm=
to
6pm.
