Cinema upstairs in Vivo. Of course, if you want to take one of our sandwich=

in, surreptitiously stashed in your handbag, in preference to a nasty hotdo=

popcorn, we’d be none the wiser. Or come back for another glass of wi=
ne
and a proper meal after the film?

to Auckland.
Tomorrow I’ll be at Villa Maria, where I’ll be tasting wines wi=
th
Sir George Fistonich – the wonderful owne=
r of
VM. George is a bit like the leadership here in Singapore – he takes a =
50
year view. Anytime you’re landing in Auckland you should try to take the tim=
e to
visit the winery just outside the airport – it is an amazing place. A=
ll
that’s left to be done is for George to plant the oak forest to make his own barrels. Per=
haps
100 years is a little too long, even for him. Anyway, I’ll be lucky enough=
to
enjoy lunch and a tasting with Sir George, Bob Campbell, Michael Cooper, Vic
Williams and other top wine writers from New Zealand. More on this when I return, but Vi=
lla Maria
will be in town in October and we’ll organize some events around
this.

Kiwi-impersonating as an Australian in one sense as Matt Harrop
the very talented winemaker is from NZ. However, the wines reflect their
provenance – Heathcote for the Shiraz

Yarra
Valley for the
Chardonnay. This Chardonnay is one of Australia’s finest – and I
choose that word deliberately as it is fine, not big bold and brassy. I
don’t do wine-by-numbers, but 94 from James Hall=
iday
says it all for those who do. A really nice comp=
arison
would be to take a bottle of this and a bottle of the =
Craighall
and…sigh….
